Directed by John Lee Hancock, The Blind Side is an upcoming film based on the 2006 book The Blind Side: The Evolution of a Game by Michael Lewis. Starring newcomer Quinton Aaron, Sandra Bullock, and Tim McGraw, the movie portrays a true story about the unlikely rise and education of Baltimore Raven Michael Other played by Quinton Aaron. He is depicted as a homeless black African-American youngster who has drifted in and out of the school system for many years.
At this point we see Leigh Anne Tuohy (Sandra Bullock) and her husband Sean Tim McGraw), a wealthy, conservative and evangelical white family take Other with them in order to help him develop and his potential. While Other stays with the Tuohy family, both Leigh and Tim gain some self-discoveries of their own. At the same time Other too faces some challenges in the new environment. As the story progresses Other, along with the guidance of his coach and the support of his adopted family, develops his potential as a successful football player. He is now recognized as “Big Mike” a successful football player whose origin belongs to the meanest streets of Memphis, Tenn.
True to Lewis’ subtitle “evolution of a game”, in many ways, Blind Side is a conventional sports movie that quite pleases the audience. You will simply love and cheer for Michael Other when he takes the fields as Baltimore Raven. As the start Michael Other was not depicted as promising as turns later on. He entered Briarcrest Christian School as a 6 ft 5 inches tall guy weighing around 340 pounds. In Lewis’ words Other was “wide in the rear and massive in the thighs,” with “long arms,” “giant hands,” and “great feet.” Other has least learning and communication skills. He was aware of where he sleeps, what he would wear, or how he would eat. It was a “special needs” teacher who realized Other’s potential of learning lessons with his hidden intelligence. Equally the family of Touhys (pronounced as two-hees) realized that Other has a remarkable physical genius. Other with the support of a naturally charitable people works hard and improves his position academically to college. The audience are constantly reminded how the black kid escape the pathologies of an addicted mother. Life with generous and caring family like the Tuohys five Michael a chance to develop his potential and ultimately become successful.
Blind Side is not a hardcore sports movie, with no big championship game. The football match that Michael is shown playing is a private school league. Yet the sequence is quite cheerful when we see Michael crushing a skinny, 180-pound white boy too simply.
According to the director, the unusual story of Leigh and Other as mother and son is “the absolute core of the book.” The Blind Side is undoubtedly a heroic presentation of a white family saving a black victim. Racism ultimately does not affect the emotions that the film elicits from the audience. As a mother, Sandra Bullock renders a strong performance in this inspirational sport drama, thus enabling her to get an award-bait role.
