The Blackout starts as ordinary love story between an actress and actor. This obvious simplicity is ousted quickly. Ferrara clouds the matter by adding pastiches and cinematographic references and presents the character that keeps on repeating that he is directing the movie at present time. So, the viewers at some point of time come to realize that if she/he is watching the final cut of Blackout of Ferrara.
The movie meanwhile shot by Mickey becomes different totally from Ferrara. The first one actually claims of reality while the film of Ferrara claims tricks. His movie does not let the viewers forget that they’re watching a movie. Thus, Ferrara only makes use of movie settings like beach, boredom, bar, psychoanalyst office and step joint. He refers constantly to cinematographic works and porn film.
The film’s core is neither emotional setback of main character nor the problems of drug but rather his relation with the job. It is upon the viewers to differentiate them by putting back different elements in the reality. The modernization is left open while director doesn’t interfere to either deny or support the paths.
In The Blackout, editing was made to have audience go from a reality level to yet another: from character’s existence to the fantasies and all his work as the filmmaker. This movie also works out in same manner except that film reality and fantasized reality aren’t generated by same brain. Mickey the director is at creation process’s basis while Matty the actor fantasizes and hallucinates.
The movie The Blackout does not have a single plot. It has many and fits together like the Russian dolls. This movie tells the love story where Nana is featured. You will definitely like the love story with the strangled woman in this movie. Murder is not certain in any of the stories. In the excerpt of Nana it is simply impossible to know that the victim passes away. Matty in the Blackout does not remember killing anyone. The murder moves from a story to yet another. The most important part is that the murder is presented always in an image form that casts uncertainty on its reality.
Because of the movie’s heterogeneous structure and cross-references, this movie cannot be reduced to a genre or a single source. All the methods of cinematic representation bring the movie to point out itself. Ferrara calls this cinema as audiovisual method of vaporization. The movie like the vampire can simply morph from a form to new one and Ferrara makes Blackout the metaphor of the transformation skill.
