The theme of the movie ‘Pirate Radio’ dates back to 60s era. It is a hilarious movie that takes place aboard a ‘pirate radio ship’ neat the British coast. Here Ifans, Hoffman and Frost play the roles of DJs.
Pirate Radio deals with a story that deals with the contribution of 8 DJs in popularizing Rock n Roll. They embark upon a mission with a boat to fall in love with this foot tapping music. In the process they land in Northern Atlantic and play rock records. However, while doing so they cross the barriers of the law. The played recorded songs to charm the generation but this episode disturbs the British government. The authority tries to stop their music mission. However, music prevails over all burdens. Pirate Radio contains some of the evergreen musical feasts of The Stones, The Beatles, Dusty Springfield, Beach Boys, Smokey Robinson, Cat Stevens and many other super talents of the music industry.
Writer and director Richard Curtis has produced magic with his aesthetic bent of mind to create a movie like Pirate Radio. The theme owes its origin to a revolution of a bygone era. It has dealt with underground radio and the storm of Rock n Roll. The director has effectively cooked all the elements of the film to produce a funny as well as captivating story.
The British authority may have put an embargo upon the underground radio. To surpass this law, music fanatics take the option of availing a boat and play the records in international waters and broadcast the songs to the mainland. The orthodox politicians try their best to stop the musical hypnotism but fail to stop the wave. Truly the politicians prove themselves to be eccentrics in failing to understand the demand of the period.
Apart from praiseworthy direction, Curtis has done an excellent task with his high quality script. The dialogues are quite heartening as well as humorous. Count (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is the main character of Pirate Radio. He may be a drug addicted DJ but his fine sense for quality music is undeniable.
Pirate Radio may not be an action flick but it has its share of adventure. Cinematography is also quite marvelous. Danny Cohen has done a great job with his camera works. Pirate Radio is a tryst with the golden age of Rock n Roll.
