Starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfriend in the lead roles Dear John is an upcoming romantic drama scheduled to release in February 2010. The film is an adaptation of Nicholas Spark’s novel having the same name. The film is directed by Lasse Hallstrom and is one of the most awaited romantic films of the year. The film explores the love dynamics between a young couple and the other intricacies of life. Though the director says that the film is an adaptation of Spark’s novel but certain additions and alterations have been done in order to dramatize the story.
If you have studied the book before going to watch this movie you will definitely find similarities in plenty of situations but deviations will also be spotted easily. John Tyree is a young soldier who meets Savannah Curtis when he comes home to North Carolina on his leave from Army. Young Tyree falls in love with Savannah at the first sight. The smitten young man could not forget the charismatic young student who was at that time pursuing a special education major from Wrightsville Beach. After a few meetings both fall in love with each other.
Soon it is time for John to return to his army life and he is compelled to leave his beloved for his work commitments. John decides to marry Savannah when he completes his tenure in Army and promises to return back to her as soon as he finishes his deployment. They keep in touch with each other through letters for the next seven years. For John, Savannah’s letters were the only thing that kept him going amidst all the adversities. The memories of being together kept their passion alive in spite of the physical distance.
Everything seemed fine till the 9/11 disaster befell. The wave of fear and burning spirit of revenge made John forget his beloved and he reenlisted himself for serving his country. Time went away and Savannah kept waiting until one day she wrote a letter to her “ Dear John” bidding adieu forever. The film is an excellent exploration of emotions and relationships. There are a few subplots all of which are entwined intricately to the main plot.
In order to know what happens to John and Savannah and their beautiful relationship you must drop in at your nearest theater when Dear John will be released. The director has tried amalgamating every loose end into a comprehensive one so that the viewers feel complete at the end of the movie.
